Connecticut has passed a new law known as “An Act Concerning Pregnant Women in the Workplace,” effective October 1, 2017. It amends the Connecticut Fair Employment Practices Act to add new protections for pregnant employees.
The Act also directs employers to provide employees with written notice of the right to be free from discrimination in relation to pregnancy, childbirth and related conditions. Employers may comply with the notice provisions by displaying a poster in a conspicuous place, accessible to employees, at the workplace.
It will be challenging to comply with this law along with federal requirements under the ADA and the Pregnancy Discrimination Act. Employers should consult with an employment law attorney to assure compliance with the new law.
